Zeek Smith

Director of Music Ministry

Zeek Smith is delighted to join the community at San Jose Episcopal as choirmaster and organist. He is a Northeast Florida native who stays busy performing, conducting, arranging, and teaching. In 2017, he completed his M.M. in Conducting (emphases in musical theatre, opera, and choral conducting) at Ithaca College. He also holds a B.A. in Music (emphases in education and choral music) from Jacksonville University where he is currently a collaborative pianist and coach/pianist for the River Tones, the vocal jazz chorus.

As a theatre musician, Zeek’s recent credits include: Pagliacci with Opera Ithaca (Assoc. Conductor/Chorus Master/Pianist); and Xanadu (Music Director), Pride and Prejudice (Music Director), Chicago (Associate Music Director), A Christmas Carol (Music Director/Arranger/Pianist), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and In The Heights at the Hangar Theatre (Assoc. Music Director), NYC: Pagliacci.

Before returning to the region, he was Director of Music at the Episcopal Church of Saints Peter & John in Auburn, NY where his husband, Hector Smith, was a cantor. Zeek also held a faculty position in the Theatre Arts Department at Ithaca College following his graduate studies.

Zeek looks forward to forming strong collaborative relationships at San Jose Episcopal and in the greater Jacksonville area that will contribute to an energetic, robust, worshipful, and inspiring music program. He hopes that community members who wish to share their feedback on the future of the music ministry will seek him out either at parish fellowship events or by scheduling a meeting during his office hours.

Grace Notes

King David's Chorus
Grades 1-6

We will be singing at the 5:30pm service on Christmas Eve. Rehearsal times and repertoire have not yet been decided. Exact details (rehearsal time and repertoire) are based on interest and skill, but the ensemble is open to all interested young people between grades 1 and 6.

The San Jose Family Choir and Orchestra

This group is open to all singers and instrumentalists from high school through adulthood who wish to participate in leading the music on an infrequent basis. We understand that there are many wonderful singers and instrumentalists in the community that cannot commit to singing or playing on a weekly basis but would like to sing and play with a group on particularly festive occasions such as Christmas Eve and Easter. This group will rehearse for a half hour at the very beginning of Wednesday evening choir rehearsal in the final weeks leading up to Christmas Eve. Zeek is arranging an accessible anthem for the 10:30pm Christmas Eve service to be accompanied by handbells and any other instrumentalists with a desire to play. This is a great opportunity for high school singers, college students on break, and busy families to come together for a special occasion to sing and make music together!

If you are interested in any of these opportunities or have more questions, please email Zeek at zeek@sanjoseepiscopal.com

Soli Deo gloria!
