Suggested Packing List For Kanuga

  • Medications
  • Shorts, t-shirts or other casual clothes
  • Jeans or long pants
  • Jacket or sweatshirt (for those cooler mountain evenings)
  • Raincoat or poncho
  • Personal toiletries (toothbrush, soap, shampoo, etc.)
  • Hairdryer
  • Flashlight
  • Athletic shoes (for hiking, walking) and socks!
  • Swimwear (if you plan to swim in the lake)
  • Camera
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Cards and/or Board Games
  • A good book to read
  • Tennis racket/tennis balls (if you want to play tennis)
  • Snacks/Drinks (please be discreet with alcoholic beverages – Kanuga and all persons coming on to Kanuga properties will follow all state and local regulations and Kanuga policies which are designed for the safety and general welfare of the community .)
  • Cell phone (there are no phones in the rooms or cabins; also please be advised that cell phone reception for the most part is spotty at best)
  • Alarm clock (if you need one)
  • Fishing gear (you do not need a Fishing License to fish AT KANUGA. If you go off property to fish, you will need a NC Fishing License. You may purchase one online at www.ncwildlife.org)
  • Binoculars
  • Guitars or other musical instruments
  • Bible and/or Prayer Book for personal devotions. Service booklets will be provided for all services.
  • Please bring a good attitude. We are going to have a wonderful weekend of food, fellowship, and faith.

Things you do not need to bring

  • Sheets/towels
  • Food (other than snacks)—Kanuga’s food is delicious and plentiful!
  • Pets of any kind!
  • Coffee (coffee, hot tea, and hot chocolate typically are available 24-hours a day in the Dining Hall)
  • Jewelry or other valuables. The doors in the Inn have locks; however, the cabin doors do not. That being said, Kanuga is a very safe place where theft typically is not a problem.

 

Please note:

  • The accommodations are very simple but always clean and comfortable.
  • Cabins have twin beds; the rooms at the Inn have two double beds. All sheets and towels are provided.
  • Rooms will not have hairdryers, alarm clocks, telephones, television, etc. Typically small bars of soap are provided in the bathrooms (however, no shampoo, lotions, etc.—this is not the Hilton!)
  • Please bring a good pair of walking shoes—even if you do not plan on hiking.
  • Cell phone coverage is not good at Kanuga; however, typically there is no problem “in town.” There are pay phones in the Lobby as well as Wi-Fi and Internet connections. You will not get Internet coverage in the cabins or Inn. Guest messages can be retrieved at the Front Desk.
  • There is no need to bring “Church clothes.” Our services will be very casual.
  • Kanuga has a wonderful Bookstore/ Giftshop that will be open part of the time that we are there. The store has a terrific collection of books (both religious and popular) as well as Kanuga T-shirts and souvenirs. There is also a small library from which you can borrow books or magazines.
  • There is a small canteen that sells candy, ice cream, and some toiletry items.
  • The Dining Hall serves water, coffee, Iced tea, and milk at meals. However, they do not serve soft drinks. If you are accustomed to an occasional Diet Coke, you will need to bring your own!!!
  • All rooms, cabins, and public areas are non-smoking only.

Driving Directions (according to kanuga.org)

FROM I-26 WEST

  • Take exit 53 (old exit 22) Upward Road.
  • Turn left on Upward Road. Cross over US 176/Spartanburg Highway onto Highland Lake Road and proceed until the road ends.
  • Turn left on NC 225 South (Greenville Highway).
  • At the traffic light, turn right on Little River Road and continue until the road ends. (Driving a bus? Please avoid Little River Road and take this alternate route.)
  • Turn right on Kanuga Road.
  • Make an immediate left onto Kanuga Lake Road.
  • Proceed to conference center (go past the "Office" on the right; past the Tennis Courts on the left; the Conference Center will be just beyond on the left).
